Lynn, Hi! Thanks for the comments. I just listened to the EMC conference call. Their numbers and outlook are good and should help convince the market that storage remains the place to be.

I noticed a change in tone when they were asked a question about competition from NTAP versus their new Chameleon product. Someone stated that they would not make comments about a competitor in "such a small area of the market". This is different from earlier comments when they claimed to have the "industry leading growth rate" in the NAS space. You know from the Merrill Lynch research that their sales force has been calling their Chameleon product the real "NTAP Killer". (Of course, they also claimed that their Celerra product was original "NTAP Killer".) Someone else said that the majority of their Chameleon sales were against NTAP competition. My guess is that the majority of these sales were to existing EMC customers. You can see from the performance specs that NTAP still carries the lead.

They continue to downplay the NAS market as small but I think they are genuinely concerned about its potential. Their efforts with Chameleon are an attempt to trump NTAP efforts to move up into the enterprise market. I've read that over half of the general purpose servers purchased today are for file serving. A tech friend working at a mortgage division of a regional bank told me that they still buy general purpose servers for file serving. They haven't bought any NAS products yet. This NAS market has a lot of open field running left.

Do you like Merrill's new analyst, Tom Kraemer?
