Nokia Neu CommTech Company, one of Nokia's joint ventures in China, and the Beijing and Hubei branches of China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC)have signed an agreement for the delivery of Nokia's WAP solution with a view to creating and delivering mobile Internet services to North, Central and Western regions of China.

Nokia Neu develops comprehensive Mobile Internet and Messaging platforms and applications for Chinese cellular market. Nokia Neu was established on June 2000 and it has today fully operational local R&D and Systems Integration centers to respond rapidly emerging mobile application needs in China. Deliveries have already begun, and the system will be operational in February this year. Following this agreement, WAP services will be offered to more than one million subscribers in China.

Mikko Mattila, Deputy General Manager of Nokia Neu, said that Nokia is very pleased to co-operate with CMCC to build WAP services which will help drive the growth of mobile Internet services in China. Moreover, together with GPRS, WAP services and applications are the first important step for the delivery of advanced next generation mobile services to the customers.

Nokia can offer operators a complete end-to-end WAP solution, including WAP gateways, WAP portal, mobile terminals, browsers, tools for WAP-based content creation and delivery, and systems integration services. In addition, Nokia Professional Services provides comprehensive service solutions for planning, deploying, managing, and enhancing WAP solutions. In supporting an applications driven business, Nokia works together with the industry's largest developer community.

This activity is crucial as for standard technologies, such as WAP. The industry is moving towards convergence of Telecom, IT, content and mobility. In this evolution, Nokia is taking a leading role and developers play an important role in this since Nokia wants to foster the creation of new services. <<
