gdichaz, Eric, or anyone,

To send a message using the short messaging system (SMS), does the user speak or type the message?

If the user speaks the message and it's converted into a written message using voice-recognition software, I agree with gdichaz that it's not part of the data tornado as we typically think of data. If the user types the message, I agree with Eric that it is.

Regardless, it's not a problem that SMS is replacing voice mail or adding messaging alternatives for the end user. Just the opposite, if SMS is indeed being chosen instead of or in addition to voice mail, it's a disruptive technology much as the telephone was discontinuous relative to the telegraph; the recieving end user could get the same message delivered in different forms.
