You are picking the worst possible light to show up a product from a company you don't like. What's the point?

Well, aside from the fact that you've asked a self-answering question, I think that building any low-performance mode into a new processor is stupid. Why not just leave it out? What's the purpose of it? It's supposed to help customers through some kind of transition, is it not? If instead it renders the transition state much worse than the initial state, why not just make the friggin cache bigger instead of wasting all that real-estate on the chip?
