(BSNS WIRE) Luminent Announces Family of Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing Modules
Supporting 10Gb/s Ethernet

Business Editors

CHATSWORTH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 24, 2001--Luminent Inc.
(Nasdaq:LMNE) today announced the availability of a family of 4
channel and 8 channel Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM)
modules designed to address the needs of the Metro Optical Ethernet
market.
Luminent's CWDM products provide optical networking equipment
manufacturers a timely and cost effective tool in supporting the
unceasing demand for higher bandwidth equipment build-outs in the
enterprise access and metropolitan area networks.
The 4 channel modules multiplex four DFB Lasers in the 1500 nm
window to provide a family of products carrying aggregate data rates
of 2.5 Gb/s, 5 Gb/s, 10 Gb/s and 12.5 Gb/s. These 4-channel CWDM
modules support a variety of link budgets -- from 3 dB to 20 dB.
This technology provides an economical approach to implementing 10
Gigabit Ethernet in the MAN by supporting 10 km to 70 km solutions
over existing installed single mode optical fiber.
To achieve these distances, Luminent is using CWDM with 20 nm
channel spacing in the low loss 1500 nm transmission window. This
spacing allows for un-cooled laser operation, a high yield
manufacturing process, and lower cost mux-demux technology; thus
providing a complete cost effective solution for various data and
telecom applications.
The 8-channel module will offer similar speed and link budget
characteristics.
"This product helps improve optical networking equipment
manufacturer's ever increasing time to market demands in implementing
10G Ethernet in the Metro Access and Metro Core," said Vikram
Natarajan, Luminent's CWDM product marketing manager.
Luminent is currently shipping this family of modules in volume to
leading manufacturers in the Metro Access space.

Future Product Developments

Luminent is developing similar CWDM solutions to meet various data
rates and link budgets in the 1300nm transmission window over single
mode optical fiber. Luminent also plans to support designs meeting
proposed IEEE 10 GbE standards.

About Luminent

Luminent designs, manufactures and sells a comprehensive line of
single mode active and passive fiber optic components for
high-capacity data transmission in the metropolitan and access
markets.
Network equipment manufacturers such as Cisco Systems, Marconi
Communications and Nortel rely on Luminent to provide technical depth,
responsive customer service and volume manufacturing to meet the
increasing requirements for transmission capacity and speed between
nationwide telecommunications networks and end-users.
