One More Step towards WLL Spread in India

Telecom panel okays limited mobility

The Telecom Commission has cleared the proposal allowing basic service operators to provide limited mobility through the wireless in local loop (WiLL) platform.

Following the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) recommendations to allow basic operators limited mobility, the Telecom Commission has also okayed the proposal and sent it to the ministry of communications.

A formal announcement on the issue is likely to be made by Union minister of communications Ram Vilas Paswan on Thursday.

Shyamal Ghosh, chairman, Telecom Commission, said, “The commission has taken the view that limited mobility should be allowed to basic operators. These views will be forwarded to the communications minister who is expected back from Patna in the evening.”

Ghosh, however, declined to divulge details on the commission’s final decision with regard to the various recommendations.

TV Ramachandran, director-general, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), said, “If the Trai recommendations have been accepted, then it would be really disappointing. We are being treated like children of a lesser god.”
