My take is XOM (and before that, each of its constitute parts) has been getting no respect for quite some time. It is without doubt an extremely well managed, rich, reasonably valued company. Maybe the law of large numbers makes the percentage Y-on-Y growth look puny compared to your average Mom and Pop chip company. Or maybe fund managers don't get bonus credits for dividends.
