Microsoft Says Its Web Sites Remain Inaccessible
MSFT Closed at 62 15/16 up 3.9% for the day and up 25% for the last 4 days. What do those guys do anyway?
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Several popular Web sites operated by Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) have been largely inaccessible to visitors since late Tuesday, the company said.
Some Internet users have been unable to gain entry to the MSN network of Web sites, which includes the Hotmail e-mail service, as well as to Microsoft.com, which features information about the Redmond, Wash., software company and its products, a spokeswoman said. MSNBC.com, a joint venture with General Electric Co.'s (GE) NBC unit, also reportedly was down, but the spokeswoman couldn't confirm that.
The outages stemmed from problems with Microsoft's domain-name servers, which are computers that help steer users to particular Web sites, the spokeswoman said. She said the problem was not a security issue.
As of about 12:45 p.m. EST Wednesday, Microsoft was working to get the Web sites up and running "and hopes to have them resolved as quickly as possible," the spokeswoman said.
Collectively, Microsoft's Web sites were the third most popular destination on the Internet in December, behind No. 1 America Online Inc. (AOL) and No. 2 Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO), according to Jupiter Media Metrix Inc., an Internet research firm.
