Oh, yeah, the number of people who die from internal bleeding from aspirin and other NSAIDS in this country is something close to 20,000! I don't know what motivates the FDA. Seems like a lot of their decisions are political.

I used to take L-tryptophan to help me get to sleep. Then some people got eonosophilia (sp?) from tryptophan so it was banned - turns out it was a bad batch from one lab in Japan - which cleaned up its act. You can buy L-tryptophan anywhere in the world but the US. If you live close to Canada you can drive there and buy it if you want to.

Now I take melatonin to help me get to sleep - it's a natural substance that your own body synthesizes - and the FDA nearly banned it because some researcher tried to patent it! And they wanted to accommodate his "intellectual property." The USPTO allows all kinds of naturally occurring substances to be patented - it's a big problem to people in Third World countries like India, because it costs a fortune to fight the patents, like some US company got a patent on neem oil, which is a naturally occurring oil that is used for a pesticide on plants. All of a sudden people who grew neem plants couldn't sell the oil to industrialized companies because of the patent. And someone got a patent on basmati rice, which is a variety found in nature.
