Bombardier Receives 100 Commuter Rail Cars Order From the MTA/LIRR
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--JANUARY 25, 2001 - 10:23 EST Bombardier Transportation has been awarded a Cdn$268.8 million (US$179.3 million) order by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority/Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) for the supply of 100 electrical multiple unit (EMU) commuter rail cars.
This order represents the conversion of an existing option included in the contract awarded on May 24, 1999 for the design, manufacture and delivery of 192 M-7 electrical multiple unit commuter cars and options for 808 additional cars. The MTA/LIRR has exercised a first option for 34 cars, on October 28, 1999. The exercise of this second option brings the firm order to 326 cars for a total value of Cdn$1 billion (US$694.4 million).
The contract for the M-7 commuter cars calls for the replacement of the electric commuter car fleets for both MTA commuter railroad agencies, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Commuter Railroad (MNCR). The MTA commuter agencies together are the largest commuter railroad network in North America, serving more than 500,000 riders every weekday.
"We are very proud of the confidence that the MTA/LIRR continues to demonstrate in Bombardier. This new order is indicative of the satisfaction of LIRR with the progress to date in the design and the manufacturing of this new generation of EMU cars," said Jacques Laparé, President, Mass Transit - North America, Bombardier Transportation.
The M-7 stainless steel carbodies will be fabricated at Bombardier's La Pocatière, Québec plant, with manufacturing and assembly at the Plattsburgh, New York, plant. The delivery of those additional cars is scheduled to follow the delivery of the base car order and run from the second quarter to the fourth quarter 2003.
The M-7 vehicles incorporate the most advanced technologies to serve the needs of the large number of passengers who ride each day. These vehicles are fully motorized married pairs, each having a full-width operator's cab at each end. The total vehicle design is focused on optimizing customer safety and comfort while ensuring excellent train performance and reliability.
