new Dell information on IA-64:
dell.com.
Computing is expected to take a quantum leap in performance through the implementation of the Intel® IA-64 architecture. Introducing a range of potential improvements spanning architecture, capabilities, performance and future scalability, IA-64 is considered by Intel to be the most significant architectural advancement since the introduction of IA-32.
Dell is working closely with Intel Corporation's help to enable customers to prepare for the introduction of the IA-64 architecture. Benefits from the improvements offered by IA-64 are expected to be:
High-Performance Interactive Technical Computing: The IA-64 architecture offers an attractive alternative in many areas that have been previously dominated by costly high-end UNIX platforms. In most cases, IA-64 processor-based platforms should be able to provide the high-performance computing power and powerful graphics needed for high-end applications at a lower price than a traditional UNIX platform. The IA-64 architecture should be especially effective in applications that are floating-point intensive, graphics intensive, or require a very large amount of system memory. Applications that should benefit significantly from IA-64 architecture include:
Data visualization tasks such as mechanical and electrical computer-aided design (CAD) and other graphics-intensive design applications that can take advantage of the IA-64 architecture's powerful MMX and SSE capabilities Technical and scientific computing tasks, such as material stress analysis, metal fatigue testing, modal density calculations, design simulation, flight simulation, and so on Finite element analysis programs (structural and thermal) Fluid dynamics Digital content creation
High-Performance for large/fast databases: Analyzing data from large databases, and doing it quickly enough to enable real-time analysis and transaction processing, requires very large memory capacity and powerful computer resources like those offered by IA-64. The IA-64-based processor platform's 64-bit memory addressing capability allows data access and analysis routines access to almost unlimited virtual data space. Excellent solutions for Internet commerce and management: To be successful on the Internet, it is critical for companies to be able to provide a good customer experience with computing power and performance to help enable real-time processing and a rich web experience. Scalability for future expansion: IA-64 systems are initially expected to be able to scale to two or four processors, depending on the platform, providing users with the ability to expand to meet their increasing needs for computing performance.
New Power for Workstations Engineers, designers and other professionals rely on the power of workstations to create, visualize, and analyze complex projects and data sets. Resource-intensive undertakings-integrated circuit design, digital content creation, mechanical CAD projects-demand even more power than before. More performance, more memory, and more features help enable quicker design turnaround and improve quality of work. Compared to IA-32, the IA-64 processor platform will expand the amount of system memory directly addressable by the processor. This should provide benefits such as:
Ability to track and work on large projects in a single, coherent file, helping reduce the time and effort needed to qualify segmented projects. Improved overall performance and increased scalability than previously available by eliminating performance-sapping, disk-based, virtual memory transactions. Excellent numerical analysis and high precision in complex calculations help supercharge performance so that engineers can quickly evaluate design options.
Early system prototypes suggest that, with IA-64, companies are likely to find a workstation platform that features:
Large memory addressability to hold content Fast bandwidth to move data in and out of subsystems Advanced processor features to quickly manipulate data Powerful graphics capability to visualize complex data sets
These capabilities come together to enable a wide range of powerful applications and tasks. From mechanical design and engineering analysis to digital content creation and electronic design automation, powerful IA-64 processor-based platforms can speed critical work and improve overall productivity. As businesses collaborate more and more over the Internet, the ability to quickly process and review tasks becomes more important than ever.
