I think that it depends on two things: 1)how much your society is changing and 2)how similar your core values are to theirs. Actually, most of the people I like the most and who are my friends typically are from places where hicks are numerous. This includes upstate New York, Wisconsin, Southern Illinois, Oklahoma (several friends) and other places. However the ex-patriot status seems to be the defining feature. These are people who were shaped by hick values but rejected the confining nature of the place that breeds it. The ones I knew and liked weren't very religious.

My own roots are out of the mid-west (pre-Oregon trail days) and Louisiana. Dominant country ancestry is 1840's Irish Potato Famine people, with a hodgepodge of other ethnicities. Religion was never considered important by either side of the family, but honor, duty, respectability and other "religious" values were passed on.

The good part about hicks is that they are simple people. They say what they think, they won't B.S. you or kiss butt to be your friend. If you're wrong they'll tell you and they won't mince words. I consider all these traits endearing. The hicks that are my best friends have completely rejected the intolerance and embrace "liberal" values of openness to personal differences. They will accept people based upon their merit and not their station or birth. Most of these people have no social status so they admire people who have done well on their own merit.
