Prions have been around for eons. It just so happens that there's a public company capable of testing it, so now you're getting blitzed by the media about it.

How would the bacteria destroy a nations oil supply? Introduce the bacteria into a pipeline? They're aerobic, couldn't survive. You'd have to leave that little detail out of your novel. In fact, the limiting factor in their ability to degrade oil is the availability of ox y gen.
