I think it's more personal than that. I think they feel that they, their relatives, and counterparts will not be able to compete in a changing world. They want to preserve the concept of inheritance and dynasty, because that may also preserve their family future. The majority of the USSC view on democracy is a combination of enough is enough and quit while you are ahead.
