I spent a lot of time last night reading through many of these posts, and learnt much. Sid, I appreciate a nay-sayer forcing people to justify their statements.

I have a question wrt fuel cells for transport. They are said to be 2-3 times more efficient at converting energy into transportation, but what about the energy density of their fuel? Methanol must have less than a third of the energy content in Kilo Joules per Kg (or Kilo calories/lb) that gasoline has. Thus the weight of methanol carried to travel, say, 100 K may be susbtantially more than that of gasoline to travel the same distance. It might also be slightly less dense (Kg/l) than gasoline, and therefore it will take more room as well. Frequent refueling might be necessary with methanol. Hydrogen is, of course, the ultimate in low density fuels. What about metal hydrides?

What is the range going to be for these systems? The simulation that gave the 2-3 times efficiency of energy utilization was made for urban buses, which need not have great acceleration, have room for low-density fuel, and can be refueled after travelling short distances.
