Hey Rande, If you get a chance check this out it sounds like these guys may have a breakthrough in battery Technology... Latest News BTW I know they are from Vegas But... Note The tables do not format right in my "cut and paste"here is the link also quotes.freerealtime.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Power Technology, Inc. Announces New Battery Test Results; Power Technology's Grid Structure Delivers Higher Charge Capacity
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA--(CCN Disclosure, January 25, 2001)--Power Technology, Inc. (OTCBB: PWTC), today announced that BC Research, Inc.'s (BCRI) Chemical and Environmental Process Group, located in Vancouver, BC, has just released the results of their latest eusing Power Technology's patented reticulated lead foams employed in flooded lead-acid batteries.
These experiments were performed to assess the performance ofPower Technology's "second generation" reticulated foam in directcomparison with the grid design currently used in conventionalflooded, single cell lead-acid batteries.
Critical measurement criteria, such as delivered capacity;specific energy and specific power, were normalized based upon thepaste weight in order to carry out a straightforward comparison withthe data obtained by using other pastes such as Bipolar Power'sproprietary lead-acid battery paste.
TEST RESULTS Discharge Actual Specific Specific "C" rate Capacity Energy Power Ah/Kg paste Wh/Kg paste W/Kg paste --------- ----------- ----------- ---------- PWTC's Reticulated Grid 2.75h 19.1 35.2 13.0
Standard grid 2.40h 6.2 11.2 4.2
For definitions, see Glossary at end of release.
Correspondingly, the charging capacity per total initial pasteweight was about 90% higher for Power Technology's foam, e.g.: 20.8Ah/Kg paste as compared to only 10.9 Ah/Kg paste for the standardgrid. This increase in charging capacity per paste weight representsan important step forward for the Company's second-generation gridstructure.
Test results further indicated that Power Technology's reticulatedstructure, because of its high specific area, allows for asignificantly higher charge capacity than a standard grid of similargeometric area.
Furthermore, the advantage of Power's reticulated lead structurelies not only in its ability to hold a larger quantity of paste butalso in the intricate interaction between the three-dimensional gridmatrix and the applied paste.
In its testing, B.C.R.I. employed a novel float charging protocol, modified from standard industry practice. Using this new approach, B.C.R.I. found that standard charging techniques "undercharged" PowerTechnology's reticulated grid. The resulting charging protocol isreferred to as the "extended two-step float charge." The standard gridcould not withstand the modified charging technique.
Power Technology's reticulated battery, when charged using thisextended two-step float charge method, provided the following data:
Discharge Actual Capacity Specific Energy Specific Power "C" rate Wh/Kg-paste Wh/Kg-paste W/Kg-paste
3.8h 26.4 52.7 13.1
Commented Lee Balak, Power Technology's President and ChiefExecutive Officer, "We are energized and excited by these latest testfindings. We are continuing to investigate and develop additional waysof increasing the power-to-energy ratio to 20w/Wh in order to meet therequirements of the hybrid and electric vehicle market. We will focusour efforts towards manufacturing the reticulated structure byalternative methods so as to compete head-on with the more exoticchemistries."
Power Technology, Inc is a Las Vegas-based technology developmentcompany, which holds several patents in the power generation and powerstorage fields, and is working to provide innovative and practicalbattery technology solutions for commercial, government, andindustrial applications worldwide.
Glossary:
Ah: Amp hour
Charging Capacity: applied charging current X charging time. Express in Ah.
Actual (or Delivered) Capacity: discharged (or delivered) current X discharge time Expressed in Ah.
C-rate: the rate at which a battery with an actual (or rated) capacity ("C") is discharged. The number represents the discharge timein hours. E.g. C/5 means the battery was discharged for 5 hours. For a battery rated at a capacity of 100 Ah, the discharge rate C/5 means that the battery was discharged for 5 hours at 20 A current.
Power: Calculated as discharge current X average voltage during discharge.
Specific Power (or Power Density): the power delivered by a battery divided by the total weight of the battery (including plates, plastic case, electrolyte, etc.). Expressed in W/kg)
Specific Energy (or Energy Density): the energy supplied by a battery divided by the total weight of the battery. Expressed in Wh/kg. The energy released by a battery can be calculated as the discharge current X discharge time X average voltage during use.
Watt = Ampere X Volt.
Wh: Watt hour
