Telson Electronics seen joining top 3 handset makers

Telson Electronics' merger with Telson Information and Communication will render the resulting company one of the three strongest players in the domestic mobile handset manufacturing business, Dongwon Securities said yesterday.

Telson Electronics is now rated as one of the three second-tier handset manufacturers along with Pantech and Sewon Telecom, while Telson Information and Communication is among the four weakest players, with the three others being Standard Telecom, Wide Telecom and Nixxo Telecom.

The merged company will join the ranks of the strongest players, filled now by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, through combining Telson Electronics' strength in CDMA handsets and Telson Information and Communication's expertise in radio systems and CDMA data modems, Dongwon said.

Consequently, the domestic handset industry will be reshaped, with three strong players, two second-tier producers (Pantech and Sewon) and three weak companies (Standard, Wide and Nixxo), according to Dongwon.

The brokerage estimated the synergic effect stemming from the merger would be worth 11 billion won a year.

Telson Electronics is expected to improve its growth potential and profitability through its alliance with Nokia, the world's largest mobile handset manufacturer.
