We may never agree totally on what went down -- but the system will spend a long time trying to recover from the damage down to it in this election, imo. And we have scarcely begun to see the lawsuits spawned by the Supreme Court's equal-protection-run-amok decision.

The win was verified by the existing laws on the books at the time of the election
I would say that the win was verified by the most partisan possible interpretation of the laws on the books, aided by Republican lawyers and demonstrators who were more numerous than the Democratic troops. Not to mention holding the strategic offices of government. Did you see the NY Times article?

I agree there was plenty to be angry with in the Dem's behavior, but they have paid for it, since imo their failure to hold the high ground cost them their chance to pull out a recount, which I think Al Gore did deserve, by all normal rules of the game, and by an impartial reading of Florida law.

It's pretty clear that the Palm Beach ballot did cost Al Gore the election. It's also clear that this was not intentional. But in the context, it's hardly a tiny technicality. The Palm Beach Post article is worth reading in this regard, to get a flavor of life at ground zero.
