Could we soon see $1.50 per pound Copper prices? What about Zinc? Here's another closure from Cominco.

Cominco looking at hydro sales opportunities

03:10 EST Friday, January 19, 2001

Cominco Ltd. chief executive officer David Thompson says the zinc miner may try to take advantage of soaring energy prices by selling more surplus hydroelectric power from its Waneta dam in British Columbia. "We will attempt to use the power market as opportunities come," he said during a conference call with analysts yesterday. Last month, the Vancouver-based metals giant said it has agreed to supply a U.S. energy company, which analysts believe is Enron Corp. of Houston, with $86-million (U.S.) worth of surplus hydro. The deal has forced Cominco to conserve energy by cutting zinc production at its nearby Trail, B.C., smelter by about 20,000 tonnes. Since Cominco never disclosed the buyer, it arranged the conference call to dispel fears that it is selling power to California utilities that are now unable to meet debt payments.
