My problem with charter schools was that they were created before anyone had any real idea if they would work. A substantial fraction are doing worse than the schools they replaced, not what you really want to do.

The idea is (or should be if it isn't) to add competition. I'd perfer vouchers to charter schools (although I worry that federal and state government may interfere too much in private schools arguing that the money is going from the government, if vouchers become wide spread). If a school doesn't perform let it suffer the same fate as a business that does not perform. And let students go to schools that do better rather then have many of them trapped in horrible schools.
