Alcatel launches integrated firewall solution for DSL subscribers

New Speed Touch Pro with Firewall delivers powerful broadband security

Paris, January 25, 2001-Alcatel (NYSE: ALA and Paris: CGEP.PA), the world leader in
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) solutions, today announced a new addition to its Speed
TouchTM family of high-speed modems : the Speed Touch Pro with Firewall. This new
modem provides a cost-effective integrated solution combining an asymmetrical DSL (ADSL)
router and powerful firewall software, as well as the possibility to implement managed
services.

The Speed Touch Pro with Firewall combines three major advantages. Placing the firewall at
the point of network access is more secure than conventional PC-based firewall technology
and increases efficiency and manageability. It also enables managed services, meaning the
service provider can perform segmentation of its client base by differentiating services. A
third advantage is the Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet integrated in the
router-installation of software on the clients' PC's is no longer necessary, which creates
more stability.

Marc Hermans, president of Alcatel's Customer Premises Division, said, "Speed Touch Pro
with Firewall has created a competitive edge for service providers. Alcatel fulfills the needs
of business customers who are seeking high-speed Internet access and high security at an
affordable price".
