Pete,

The Congress has more to do with deficits and surpluses.

How old were you in 1981? Anyone who believes that the 1981 budget was not Reagan's baby was not paying attention. During the Reagan administration, Congress spent considerably less than amount requested by the White House.

It only took 6 years of a Republican House to go from "300 billion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see" (from a commentary on Clinton's 94 budget) to "going to zero debt faster than anyone could have expected" (from yesterday's AG testimony).

Half of the work was Clinton's 1993 Deficit Reduction Act, which passed without a single Republican vote. Newt later led the charge for the other half. If AG testified that we have zero debt, then he is even denser than I thought.

It took over 40 years of a Democratic House to generate that 5 trillion in debt you refer to

The debt was $0.8 trillion in 1980. By the time Reagan left office, it was over $3 trillion. By the time Bush left office, it was up around $5 trillion.

The huge debt we have is the direct result of Reagan ignoring his budget advisor, and ignoring common sense.

But you guys sure do love to pass the blame.
