Stopped into the local Schwab branch around 11am, the first time I had been inside the place in nearly a year. I was dumbfounded by the type of folks hanging around the quote machines. It looked EXACTLY like the crowd I saw years ago at the dog tracks: the dregs of society wearing cheap suits and looking one step away from living on the street. The ones that actually spoke english were saying things like "Oh hell, I've got to dump these two contracts to raise 700 dollars or those idiots in margin are gonna make me sell all my JDSU".. Every now and then a short asian woman, perhaps 60 years old, would point at her screen and pull her husband over and say "Look, good! I just made four-tee dollah! Ha ha!" or "Oh, down, down. Dis is bad. Dis is a vewwy mean stock"

Two guys leaning against the wall were actually reading the Bay Meadows horse-track newspaper and talking about how they had met the rider the night before and thus were sure of the outcome.

There was a big sign that said "Limit your terminal time to 5 minutes if there are people waiting." Well I stood there for perhaps 10 minutes, just watching these folks, and there were 6 people waiting in line in front of me. Out of the 10 terminals against the wall, not a single person ever left. Several appeared to be camped out for the entire day, with food and drinks scattered everywhere.

It's sad to say that these type of people are exactly who Greenspan is trying to save from themselves. Why doesn't he put them out of their misery and remove this blight of idiotic speculation from our collective society?
