Scott, Serif typefaces:

Visit your bookcase or local library and grab a dozen regular-size books. Betcha none of the body text is written with sans-serif type. The very reason the publishing industry uses serif type is because the individual serifs aid in character recognition.

Sans-serifs are great for short blurbs, advertising taglines, instructional help text, and the like. Novels, however, can't be read this way. Remember, threads are novels—people read them 20-50-100-150 pages at a sitting, night upon night. This type of eye exercise relies on completely effortless character recognition.

Re-inventing reading—or the wheel—is ill-advised here, as the publishing industry has been fiddling with this stuff for about 400 years. They've got a pretty good headstart, ever since that Gutenburg chap.
