Bill,
While usually I think that you are right on with your comments, this is one time when I must disagree. A computer monitor is not the same as a printed page. I'm not a well versed in typography issues, all I know is that whenever I use a program for a long time I end up changing the font from serif to a non-serif.
To me the real issue is preserving the power of the reader to view info as they choose. I have no wish to impose a sans-serif on everyone. All I want is for SI to preserve our ability to choose.
This guy said it better than I can -

OT, re fonts... Connor, funny thing is that everybody's complaints aren't the same. For ME, for instance, the problem is that the new fonts are too small. That's because I've always chosen to display my SI fonts in IE's "Larger" font-option -- but the new SI system doesn't allow me to do that, or allow individual users to customize their displays in any OTHER ways (you can play with them a bit through the "Accessibility" options in IE, but that is NOT a real solution because it can then mess-up the displays in OTHER [non-SI] windows).
So the real point is that SI's changes have removed users' ability to choose their own displays -- whether they want their fonts bigger, smaller, or whatever. Which means they ought to put things back the way they were, so we can again be masters of our own domain...
