A survey of the recent short sale data shows the following:

Change in short sales for selected SEM stocks -

LRCX....+10.4%
KLIC....+10.6%
AMAT...+58.3%
PRIA....+67.6%
VECO....+67.6%
PHTN....+76.1%
NVLS....+116.5%
KLAC....+127.9%
ASML....+318.4%
ASYT....+324.8%

Period - 11/00 -> 1/01:
KLIC....-21.7%
PRIA....-17.1%
VECO....+4.7%
PHTN....+11.4%
LRCX....+11.5%

AMKR....+16.7%
AMAT....+26.9%
NVLS....+35.0%
ASYT....+90.2%
KLAC....+147.3%

While this data is open countless interpretations, including by those who feel it essentially meaningless (as opposed to those who want to prove a singular point...), and the numbers could change direction in a single month, Klic shareholders should be encouraged by the favorable position and trend the short sales are showing. The pattern since November is especially pleasing as it suggests a true divergence from the most other equipment stocks.

'Suggests' is the key word in the previous sentence. Short sale data is notorious for distortions etc. thus the patterns shown above may be, in effect, false. These facts should be used in the context of the environment of the industry as a whole, and the other recent opinions appearing on this thread and elsewhere, as a small part of the input prior to making an investment decision.
