I was similarly put off by the LW titles, but followed some other reasonable minds over here. It pays to lift ones roots periodically lest stagnation sets in.

There are many issues which people of reason could disagree. A lot of it comes down to personal experience. I developed a really negative opinion about the welfare system 20 years ago when for a brief time in my life I became disabled as a result of an accident.

What I found was that I was in a no-man's land of government and uncaring bureaucrats that were more interested in giving money to people who had never worked, showed no interest in changing that, but who had the fortune of being targeted by the laws.

Through a strange set of unfortunate coincidences, and some flukes in the laws, I found that I was only able to collect disability on my HIGH SCHOOL burger job. I was working in a high-paying union job at the time. Here I was a veteran who volunteered service to country but could not qualify for what was being given freely to people who made less of a societal contribution.

I had just left the Navy and hadn't been in my wage earning job to have THOSE wages qualify. It turns out that servicemen aren't paying into the system of disability in the state where they were born, lived, and were stationed.

This, to me, was insane. I've since recovered and am now a well-paid professional. But I still bear the anger, outrage and scars, plus a small lingering and unpaid disability from the injury. I have compassion for anyone who would find themselves in similar circumstances.
