LOL! I used to say that Boot Camp was like mowing the lawn, it brings all the high points down to the low points.

I guess if your goal is a uniformly uneducated populace, then the "Hands off" program is precisely the remedy. If, however, your goal is to educate children, then I think you need to have mentoring for the kids who don't have these resources at home.

I met with a lovely lady yesterday who is my spectrometer vendor. She is out from beautiful CT where they make my instrumentation. Anyway, we finished our business and spent about 30 minutes talking about our loves of science, conversation, discussion and whatnot. She is involved in mentoring.

This kind of community service enriched her life (she is unmarried and has no kids) and the lives of those she interacts with. Truly a win-win for all involved.
