I just picked up a Nikon Coolpix 990 from buy.com for 833.00 with shipping, Came with a 16 mb lexar flash card. I will never buy a roll of film again. last weekend I went to N.H., came back with 300 pic's, made 5 CDR's and passed them out to my friends. Total cost $2.75. I also use nikon net, for the pic's that I want on paper (very few) I wait till I have 20 or so and upload them for printing. average cost with shipping .60 cents each
Glen, my experience is similar, if not identical to yours. I have started sending CD's, but find that many people don't have photo software that is convenient for viewing. Now I am in the habit of placing photos on my photopoint site after any major family event. I send the web address to my folks, my brother in Boston, my sisters in Chicago and SanFrancisco, and all my in-laws in Europe.
I wish I could say that many people have experiences like yours (ours), but only 60% of US families have a PC, some percentage of that use the Internet, some percentage thereof have photo viewing software and even fewer have CD-R's. It is going to take a while for digital photography to take off.
I was very uplifted by your experience and the enthusiasm of your post.
I have always believed digital photography to be habit forming, highly infectious and incurable. You seem to have been bitten.
Now I hope you upgraded to a SanDisk CompactFlash card!
