Abstract
Fuel cells in power quality applications must have fast response and the ability to supply high inrush loads such as motors. Working with Enable Fuel Cell, EPRI's Power Electronics Applications Center (PEAC) created a specification and placed an order for a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell design specifically for fast response. The complete system consumes hydrogen, tap water, and air to produce 3 kilowatts of DC electrical power at approximately 50 V with the exhaust being warm, humidified air. The output of the fuel cell is modified by DC/DC converters and inverters to produce 3-phase 208 Y, 200 VDC, and 400 VDC. The variety of output options allows the system to operate in parallel with the grid, separate from the grid, as a power source for an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and as a power source for an adjustable-speed drive. This report provides preliminary test data on the system and discusses the use of fuel cell technology for power quality applications and future testing.
