As a boy I watched Al McGuire play with the Knicks. He was a scrub while his brother Dick was almost a star. As I remember, Al always had a white bandage on his nose because it was always broken, whether in a fight, or diving for a loose ball. He used to come in to guard specific players such as Bob Cousy. He would drive them all crazy. He played only for a couple of years in the pros but I never forgot the determination of Allie McGuire to overcome what was a glaring lack of native skills. Today as i approch some new crossroads in my own life and have renewed doubts about my capabilities, I will ask myself, What would Al do? On monday there will be several shocked folks when they hear from me. I hope I have the guts like Al.
