John,
<< Parthus Warns of 2.5g Delay ... Overheating mobile handsets and poor battery life could delay the mass take-up of the next generation of internet enabled devices by at least one year, Irish technology firm Parthus cautioned. Parthus chief executive Brian Long says "I don't think we'll see mass use of GPRS until the end of 2002. GPRS cellphones will go on sale this year, but the big issue is performance. Phones are running too hot and talk time is too low."
What's your take on Parthus?
Any NOK connection?
Sounds to me like they are not going to be a contributor to a solution to the well publicized ... and obviously real ... technology problems currently associated with GPRS rollout.
>> Parthus Technologies PL (NASD: PRTH) - Dublin Ireland
Parthus Technologies (formerly Silicon Systems) develops technology, which it licenses as intellectual property (IP), that supports m-commerce. STMicroelectronics (two-thirds of sales), National Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, and others use Parthus' IP to create semiconductors, supporting software, and electronic circuitry for devices such as cell phones, handheld computers, and MP3 players. Parthus is also gearing up to produce its own chips. Contract IP development accounts for nearly 75% of Parthus' sales; the remainder is from licensing. Co-founder and CEO Brian Long owns 23% of the company; Goldman Sachs owns 19%. For the 6 months ended 6/30/00, total revenue rose 57% to $14M. Net loss applicable to Common totaled $10.3M, up from $891K. Results reflect the continued expansion of the customer base, offset by higher personnel and related costs. Partners seem to be 3COM, PrairieComm, NVIDIA, Psion, and Sony. <<
