Chelsea Asked for Unprecedented Secret Service Extension

Ex-first daughter Chelsea Clinton personally requested that her Secret Service bodyguard protection continue after her parents left the White House, even though she isn't entitled to the extra security now that her father's presidency is over.

A member of a former president's family who received Secret Service protection tells that it was Chelsea herself who asked for the special treatment, citing sources inside the agency.

Normally, only the president and his wife are entitled to a Secret Service security detail after they leave the White House.

But on his last full day in office Bill Clinton ordered agents to continue guarding his daughter "temporarily." Reportedly the extended protection could last "several months."

"This is outrageous," the presidential relative said, noting yet another tawdry aspect to the Clintons' not-so-final exit.

Secret Service spokesman Jim Mackin announced the extension on Thursday, saying it would also cover Vice President Al Gore.

Mackin declined to say how many more months the protection would be offered, how much it would cost or how many agents would be assigned to Chelsea and Gore.

White House lawyer Karen Tramontano refused to answer questions about why ex-President Clinton made the requests.

The Clintons will be the last former president and first lady eligible for Secret Service protection for life.

Because of a change in federal law in 1997, President Bush and his wife Laura will be offered protection for a maximum of 10 years after they leave the White House.
