That's not true. Aluminum is sometimes used for wide spans because it's lighter. All the wires on poles around my neighbourhood are copper. I thought most long distance transmission wires are also copper where weight is not a concern. Copper is used in the windings of motors and generators. All the new wind farms being established will use lots of copper.
