Re: Personal firewalls

Personal firewalls like Zone Alarm, Black Ice, etc. are becoming more popular and should be regarded as necessary utilities for anyone with an always-on connection such as cable modem or DSL. To see why, visit grc.com

For the past year or so I've been using Conceal Private Desktop from Signal 9 (since bought by McAfee and now marketed as McAfee Personal Firewall) and have been pleased with it. Steve Gibson (owner of GRC.com) has high praise for ZoneAlarm so my guess is that you'll do well with it. The important point is to be proactive when it comes to security. Most of the recent network security incidents (such as this past week's MSFT outages) are the result of thousands of compromised PCs being harnessed to work in unison to create these so-called distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. Awareness is the key to avoid having one's PC becoming someone else's tool for mischief.
