We save kids that certainly wouldn't have survived. This is certainly a touchy subject and the standard I suspect that was in place as recently as the 1940's is as you suggest. In certain regional areas I'm sure it still goes on. The relative burden of these "miracle babies" is EXTREMELY expensive and there are issues of morality when there are infants in the same country dying for lack of basic medical care.
