TO BUSINESS AND MEDICAL EDITORS:

Sunrise Meets With Refractive Surgeons at the Hawaii 2001 Eye Meeting

FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ --
Sunrise Technologies International, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNRS) announced today that
nearly 500 U.S. and International ophthalmologists attended the Hawaii 2001
meeting in Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii.
The Company sponsored a number of events, including a dawn breakfast
meeting on Friday that attracted approximately 300 doctors, and a specific
HYPERION(TM) LTK System training session on Monday where doctors had an
opportunity for hands-on training on the system.
New topics that were discussed included various drying techniques, new
nomograms and other treatment methods that are being used by doctors with the
HYPERION LTK System in their efforts to satisfy the farsighted patient.
"Fellow refractive surgeons had a busy week. We were able to discuss the
SUNRISE LTK(TM) patient experience and the procedure's efficacy. We are
finding that this three second procedure, where there is no cutting of tissue,
is reassuring to patients," said Lee Harman, M.D., FACS of Arlington,
Washington who was one of the presenting surgeons at the dawn breakfast
meeting on Friday.
"The Hawaiian 2001 Eye Meeting provided an excellent opportunity to
discuss the HYPERION LTK System and its three second, no touch procedure with
refractive surgeons. In addition, it gave doctors a chance to talk with each
other about techniques, patient profiles and other issues important to them in
treating patients. Those interactions not only help advance our procedure,
but all of refractive surgery," said C. Russell Trenary III, Sunrise Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer.
In addition, Company officials had an opportunity to meet with selected
refractive surgeons from Korea, which is the largest laser vision correction
market in Asia. The Company announced that it has reached agreement with HYE
KWANG Technologies, Inc., Korea's largest excimer laser distributor, to begin
selling the Sunrise laser when it receives regulatory approval in Korea.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Company's HYPERION(TM)
LTK System on June 30, 2000 for the temporary reduction of hyperopia in
patients with +0.75 TO +2.50 diopters of MRSE with less than or equal to
+/- 0.75 diopters of astigmatism, who are 40 years of age or older with
documented stability of refraction for the prior 6 months, as demonstrated by
a change of less than or equal to 0.50D in spherical and cylindrical
components of the manifest refraction. The magnitude of correction with this
treatment diminishes over time, with some patients retaining some or all of
their refractive correction. The new labeling says that, based upon existing
information for the clinical parameters used in the clinical trial, the
Company's model for the average longevity for the procedure indicates that
some of the effect lasts 10 years and beyond. Age related drift towards
hyperopia contributes to the loss of effect after the initial two years.
Sunrise Technologies International, Inc. is a refractive surgery company
based in Fremont, California, that has developed holmium:YAG laser-based
systems that utilize a patented process for shrinking collagen developed by
Dr. Bruce Sand (the "Sand Process") in correcting ophthalmic refractive
conditions.
