Alcatel Launches Leading-Edge Windows 2000 Solution for Secure Virtual Private Networks
PARIS, FRANCE--JANUARY 29, 2001 - 11:42 EST
Secure Remote Access Communications Now Available Across All Major Windows Operating Systems
Alcatel (BOURSE:CGEP.PA) (NYSE:ALA) today reaffirmed its position as a global leader in secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions with the launch of the Alcatel Secure VPN Client for Windows 2000. The VPN client software is designed to interoperate with Alcatel's 7130 Secure VPN Gateways (SVG) to secure communications between corporate offices and remote computers across all major Windows operating systems.
Alcatel's Secure VPN customers -- service providers and enterprises -- can quickly and cost-effectively install the Alcatel Secure VPN Client for Windows 2000 to extend their network's functionality to telecommuters and mobile workers who use Windows 2000 laptops and workstations. This allows customers to enhance their secure remote access communications capabilities and improve their overall network operations.
Leading workforce productivity solutions provider, Calian Technology Ltd., is among the first to trial Alcatel's latest technology.
"Like most organizations today, Calian's success relies heavily on confidential communications between our corporate offices and our off-site employees," says Mark Blevis, network and security specialist with Calian. "Alcatel's Secure VPN Client for Windows 2000 provides optimum security and allows us to take full advantage of our network."
The Alcatel Secure VPN Client for Windows 2000 is one of the only Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) tunneling VPN clients available for use with Windows 2000 operating systems. IPSec is widely recognized as the industry standard for secure VPN interoperability. Tunneling is a secure communication method that hides an originator's message header (i.e., private IP address) by encrypting it and adding a second, clear header (i.e., registered IP address) to the message.
"Alcatel is committed to satisfying customer demand for a broad portfolio of secure VPN solutions that complement existing deployments and protect their investments," said Tim Hember, Alcatel's VP of IPVPN. "As communications technology evolves, Alcatel continues to develop leading-edge VPN products that interoperate seamlessly and guarantee secure end-to-end communications."
In addition to Windows 2000, the Alcatel Secure VPN Client family also offers solutions for Windows 95, 98 and NT 4.0 operating systems. It can validate users via Shared Secret authentication, or an external RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) server, while providing a blocking mode within the VPN and detailed logging. Additionally, Alcatel customers can continue to rely on the strong encryption standards associated with the Alcatel Secure VPN Solution. This ensures encryption security is not undermined by an auto-negotiated encryption level (i.e., "strong" if the "strongest" cannot be negotiated) without user awareness.
This product is available as a bundled component with the Alcatel 7130 series of Secure VPN Gateways. Customers with unlimited client support follow simple on-screen instructions to quickly and easily install the software, and the administrator can create separate, secure profiles to upload onto each remote workstation/laptop.
