| | Redback Networks' SmartEdge Platform Extends Williams Communications' ReachMulti-Year, Multi-Million Dollar Agreement With Redback Enables Williams to Scale Long Haul Transport and Metro Networks and More Rapidly Provision Customers SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan 29, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Redback Networks (Nasdaq: RBAK chart, msgs), a leading provider of advanced networking solutions, today announced that Williams Communications (NYSE: WCG chart, msgs) will be deploying the Redback(R) SmartEdge(TM) 800 multi-service optical platform in its fiber optic networks nationwide. The multi-year, multi-million dollar agreement with Redback allows Williams Communications to extend its leadership role by enabling it to increase the scalability and reduce the provisioning requirements in both its long haul and metro transport networks. The SmartEdge will be deployed in Williams Communications' markets throughout the United States.
"Our mission is to simplify the management and deployment of new broadband services that are defining the future of communications," said Jeff Storey, senior vice president and chief operations officer of Williams Communications' network unit. "Redback's SmartEdge will enable Williams to dramatically reduce our provisioning, management and delivery costs for both SONET private line and emerging IP-based services."
The SmartEdge is a powerful multi-service optical platform that provides significant advantages in system density and provisioning. For improving the economics and operations of existing SONET/SDH networks, the SmartEdge delivers up to six times more port density than traditional systems, thus enabling carriers and service providers to rapidly expand while minimizing space and power requirements. Paired with the NetOp(TM) management system, the SmartEdge also offers major advantages and operational savings through greatly simplified service provisioning. As leading carriers and providers migrate from traditional TDM transport to IP-based services, the SmartEdge also provides the ideal platform to support both existing TDM and new IP services.
"In today's competitive marketplace, carriers like Williams Communications need to harness truly leading-edge technology to support the ever-growing transport and service needs of their expanding customer bases," said Larry Blair, vice president of marketing at Redback Networks. "While today's networks are largely built on older, traditional optical equipment, service providers and carriers are finding that deploying state-of-the-art technology, such as the SmartEdge, is essential to effectively competing in the market. As we continue to see, demand for data services is rising steadily and migration is towards more IP-based services."
