Quincy, it is difficult to be in any (crowded) place at 2-3Ghz where one cannot see at least two base stations. (compared to empty deserts where lower carrier frequencies are a much better system for the lonely customer)
That's why the whole system is a question of hierarchies, overlapping systems of RF-penetration, bend around corner bands and high capacity where it is crowded.
In terms of positioning the need for accuracy also varies between the most crowded (indoor), high capacity base stations in every corner, locations and empty highways through the deserts.
Personally I don't think I will have a need for 10 meter accuracy in an empty desert, but in the mall +/- 2 meter might be a good way of getting a special on a hamburger, and maybe best to find that empty parking space down under. (snow and ice is a problem for uncovered parking lots)

P.S. Sweden already decided that the Big Swedish Brother cannot give speeding tickets based on how fast ones mobile phone appears to have moved, but paying parking fees by SMS is nice, with graded fees according to location.
P.P.S. Public, underground transportation is also very important, not just for sleeping another 15 minutes, and metros, bullet trains in Japan are of utmost importance as oil gets more and more expensive, less and less spare time. |
