I read somewhere that CORV and SYCM were both working on an optical card to slot into a PC like an ethernet card, with projected capacity up to 100 Mbps.

Hmm. You don't need optical to get 100 Mbps. Category 5(?) twisted-pair cable is fine for 100Mbps.
