Do you see anything like this in Cisco's future?

IBM had a broader scope of products and could provide complete solutions. Cisco is a networking hardware company. Like IBM in the early 90's, Cisco places a big emphasis on their hardware and they were expanding like mad until the recent hiring freeze in anticipation of growth to come.

Now, I don't see routing and switching hardware necessarily going off a cliff, but I do see it becoming more of a commodity like the processing power of mainframes and (especially) PC's.

Cisco also seems to be suffering the "not invented here" syndrome and staying competitive through acquisitions; not research and development.

IBM has reinvented itself to being a solutions and services driven company with some OEM technology on the side. In fact, Cisco is one of IBM's OEM customers. (Like wise, IBM sells and supports Cisco equipment through their services.) Wonder if Cisco will do the same?
