When all else fails, do a fresh install of the OS and do the backup thing:

------------------------------------------

MY BULLET PROOF BACK-UP SYSTEM:

1. Install a large second hard drive, just for the purpose of holding back up data from C:

2. Buy Drive Image 4

3. Create an image of C: about every one to two weeks.

4. Back up critical data regularly (daily to be safe) to the second hard drive and onto Zip or CDR/CDRW.

When you have a problem, it's only about 20-30 minutes at the most to restore an image and copy all your critical data back to C: and you are back to a fully functional computer.

------------------------------------------
I back up data and image FAITHFULLY. My computer systems are bullet proof.

Drive Image will save you much grief, believe me. I have done the format and reinstall thing about 100 times on my various computers over the years.

I know it doesn't answer your question, but now may be a good time to get a backup / restore system in place.

PS
I know MS ME has a restore system, but I don't think it will compete with Drive Image 4:

Good luck!
