Ben,

<< Parthus revisited >>

Hey, ole Buddy.

What kind of Blarney is this?

You are not seriously comparing a company with 32 million in annual sales (2/3 rds from 1 customer) and income of - 16.0 Mil with net profit margin of - 50.20% to Nokia are you?

If so to what possible end?

<< For the record - Parthus -- % off high: 46% - % off low: 66% - Nokia -- % off high: 42% - % off low: 24% - If Parthus's cow is in a ditch - Nokia's cow keeps it company. >>

I'm darned glad that you did not include my largest holding (QCOM) in that exercise, particularly if you are calculating it on a 52 week basis.

<< In light of Parthus's collection of products - including their 2.5G GPRS Platform - is labeling Parthus a "Bluetooth company" accurate? >>

Yes, Ben, it is. Do some DD. Their claim to fame pre Bluetooth has been MP3 and other audio chips.

<< Our 2.5G platform delivers broadband 'always on' GPRS connectivity to wireless devices >>

Doesn't sound like that one is going anywhere, does it?

You might want to compare this company to let's say IDCC. Other than market cap they do not compare very favorably ... and you have never heard me promote IDCC.

>> Parthus Technologies PL (NASD: PRTH) - Dublin Ireland

Parthus Technologies (formerly Silicon Systems) develops technology, which it licenses as intellectual property (IP), that supports m-commerce. STMicroelectronics (two-thirds of sales), National Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, and others use Parthus' IP to create semiconductors, supporting software, and electronic circuitry for devices such as cell phones, handheld computers, and MP3 players. Parthus is also gearing up to produce its own chips. Contract IP development accounts for nearly 75% of Parthus' sales; the remainder is from licensing. Co-founder and CEO Brian Long owns 23% of the company; Goldman Sachs owns 19%. For the 6 months ended 6/30/00, total revenue rose 57% to $14M. Net loss applicable to Common totaled $10.3M, up from $891K. Results reflect the continued expansion of the customer base, offset by higher personnel and related costs. Partners seem to be 3COM, PrairieComm, NVIDIA, Psion, and Sony. <<

Brian Long

>> Chief Executive Officer and founding member of Parthus. Since 1993 he has built the Company up to be one of the worlds largest independent providers of platform level intellectual property (IP). He has more than 18 years experience in developing IP solutions for the semiconductor industry with various organizations including AT&T and Digital Equipment Corporation. Brian is on the board of the National Microelectronics Research Centre and holds a Masters degree in Electronic Engineering. <<

Well, he's an EE (masters type) That counts for something.

When he acquired Frontier Design’s GSM/GPRS division last July it was announced that "Parthus intends to license GPRS technology to its global customer base by the end of 2000, with roadmap plans to launch an Edge Platform in mid 2001".

Doesn't sound like that has panned out too well does it?

Maybe he should have stuck to MP3 chips?

I can see it now ... "Parthus Solutions Save GPRS by Xmas 2002"

I wonder if his failure to accomplish his objective had anything to do with his quotes coinciding with his earnings report.

Peter Clarke in EE Times had this to say about the acquisition when it was made:

>> Parthus Acquires Frontier GSM Design Team

06/29/00

Parthus Technologies plc, the fast-expanding Dublin-based design services and intellectual property group, has acquired a communications design team of seven or eight engineers based in Melbourne, Fla., from Frontier Design BV (Leuven, Belgium). The acquisition of the team and its related design portfolio has now been completed, although the size of the cash deal for the team's intellectual property has not been disclosed.

Parthus said that as a result of the acquisition it would be licensing General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology to customers by the end of 2000, with plans to launch a design platform for GSM's next-generation Edge specification in mid 2001.

<snip>

"Acquiring the engineering team and GPRS technology is the third deal we have successfully completed in the past three quarters," said Brian Long, chief executive officer of Parthus. "This deal specifically delivers critical mobile Internet functionality for 2.5G and 3G [third-generation] systems for our global customer base and strategically expands our portfolio of intellectual property powering the mobile Internet."

Parthus has been expanding from design services into intellectual property licensing. The Florida design team is the company's second in the United States and the seventh worldwide for Parthus, which employs a total of some 260 design engineers.

Parthus said it will expand its Florida team in the coming year to complement the product range of Bluetooth, GPS, smart-phone and MP3 platforms.

<snip>

Beke stressed that Frontier was not closing its Florida office but would be building up a wireless and GSM group with greater expertise at a slightly lower level of abstraction, closer to hardware and system-on-chip design. <<

Brian Long. Irish "Entrempeneur of the Year". Give me a break. Please.

You REALLY can do better than this. <g> You usually do.

In this particular case, and on this subject, and relative to your particular "chat" with a long time contributor to this thread, that contributor achieved more credibility than you, I am sorry to say.

Best Regards,
