I want to see the gulf between rich and poor, between haves and have nots shrink not grow- because I am selfish, and that is the world I want.

So do I - with reservations. We can shrink the gulf between the rich and poor by taking from the rich and giving to the poor, but that's been tried before, and it hasn't worked very well. What was it that was once said of socialist states... "unable to share the wealth, they had to content themselves with sharing the poverty".

I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of shrinking the gap between the rich and the poor by trying to provide opportunities for the poor. But we can't force opportunity down people's throats, and I don't think we're responsible for providing anything more than a minimal safety net for those who will not take advantage of opportunities.

I also believe that shrinking the gap between rich countries an poor ones is of paramount importance to our long-term security - and exporting some jobs to countries where they are desperately needed is an effective way to do this.
