Nortel Networks to Help Customers Exploit Global `Content Boom' With New Personal Internet Strategy, Products, Technology
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 30, 2001--
Sets New Standard for Content-Rich Web Service Delivery by
Radically Changing How Content, Users Come Together on Internet
Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSE:NT.) today unveiled products and technology as part of its new Personal Internet initiative that will ignite the global 'content boom' and help create long-term revenue opportunities for service and content providers.
Setting the stage for the next phase of its high-performance Internet strategy, Nortel Networks Personal Internet is a new approach that will radically alter how users and content come together on the Internet by leveraging recent advances in content networking technology.
Underscoring Nortel Networks Personal Internet is the introduction of a suite of new content networking products and patent-pending technology that will go well beyond conventional offerings to enable truly end-to-end, personalized content delivery from the subscriber edge through the optical core to the content edge and back.
Nortel Networks Personal Internet will move beyond today's content delivery services by building a new layer of network intelligence that is aware of the personal preferences of individual Internet users and the attributes of content being requested. Incorporating this intelligence into the content delivery process maximizes revenue opportunities for service providers, who will be able to deliver a user-customized, content-rich, secure and high-performance Web experience virtually 'anytime, anywhere' and on any browser-capable device.
Nortel Networks Personal Internet solutions will include new and existing content networking products at both the subscriber (access) edge and the content (data/hosting center) edge. These strategic locations at the edge of the Internet will provide a new control point where 'best content' decisions will be made.
"Front-ending our content with Nortel Networks Alteon Web switches gives us maximum uptime, along with the ability to flexibly deliver content," said Farzad Nazem, chief technology officer, Yahoo!.
"We believe in Nortel Networks fundamental vision to make networks more intelligent, and have chosen to standardize on Alteon content switches within our data center operations for high-performance, intelligent local server load balancing," Nazem said.
The content boom is being accelerated by explosive growth in broadband adoption, coupled with insatiable demand for new content, business applications outsourcing, dramatic increases in the number of Web-enabled devices and Web destinations, and globalization of the Internet.
"The content boom is a major new market phenomenon driving the innovative alliances we are seeing from the likes of Vivendi and Seagrams, and Enron and Blockbuster," said Clarence Chandran, chief operating officer, Nortel Networks.
"Nortel Networks Personal Internet is as much about addressing the needs of end users who want instantaneous access to relevant content as it is about the needs of service and content providers to target value-added content at specific audiences in order to create exciting new services and revenue opportunities," Chandran said.
The content-related market opportunity is expected to grow to over US$33 billion in the next three years, according to research from RHK. Ovum Communications, Ltd., expects the market for next generation Internet services to soar from US$74 million this year to nearly US$40 billion by 2006.
"The Personal Internet delivers network-wide content intelligence which enables the Wireless Internet, the Local Internet, and the Optical Internet to drive personalization and to realize the path to profitability," said Anil Khatod, president, Global Internet Solutions, Nortel Networks. "It's the key to advancing our high-performance Internet strategy, unlocking the true value of the Internet for consumers, content providers and service providers around the world."
