I think Sun will only take Linux so far...

... and mainly to the client and the departmental servers at best.

Traditionally, Linux has been developed by individuals who were able
to work on it in their own time and expense, and willing to contribute back
to the community their efforts. This is the reason that until recently Linux
had very poor SMP capabilities, most people do not buy multi-cpu
machines to be run at home. Most of the SMP has been driven by vendors
looking for business solutions.

The problem is that any expensive R&D that goes into Linux becomes freely
shared by the community due to the GPL license. This is quite a disincentive
for vendors to solve excessively difficult problems if the cost cannot be
reclaimed through higher prices, and competitors get a free ride on the results.

Sun will keep Solaris for its high end machines, where they can add intellectual
value and recover the cost from its products without giving it away for free. This
is the same for the other unixes as well, they will have to justify their price by
the value added they have over Linux. So far, it seems that moves by IBM, HP
and SGI subsume their own propriertory Unixes, which will ultimately lead to
the problem that I wrote about, no one will do the R&D for the hard problems,
leaving a vacuum at the high end.
