kyrosL:There is one Large Debt that does NOT appear on the books:
The Outlandish Medicare promises made to future Seniors.
Any current estimates are a mere shadow of it's monstrous reality.
This is why the Medicare checkbook MUST be taken out of
-the Government's hands
-individuals'hands ( ie, don't give them a signed, blank check, where all they have to do is fill in the astronomical amount.( That IS the CURRENT system, BTW ).

The latest government debt can be found here:
publicdebt.treas.gov
Current Held by the Government Owed to the Public Total 01/26/2001 2,369,372,499,843.13 3,371,063,344,354.87 5,740,435,844,198.00
So there is 3.4 trillion held by the public and 2.4 trillion held by the government, mostly in the SS trust fund.
Of course, when we are talking about the debt problem in the US it's not this debt we mean. It's the trillions owed by individuals and companies.
