I agree with every word you said.

I have the exact same feelings about betting stocks and horses in terms of the choking point. I can bet much more on stocks without feeling a thing. For me I think it has to do with streaks and confidence. It's much easier to feel confident in a business's prospects than a horse's. :-) And no matter how good you are at the track you are vulnerable to long losing streaks that are emotionally draining - even when the amount of money isn't that significant. Perhaps it's an ego thing.

I also agree that there are a lot of different paths to profitability. But they all have one thing in common - knowing when the general public is making a mistake on the board.
