Fred: I don't think your information on large inverters (to convert a fuel cell's DC output to AC) being less efficient than small ones is correct. The figures from ERC's Santa Clara demo project (using an inverter in the 2 megawatt range) showed the inverter operating at 98% efficiency, not the 90-95% you suggested. The efficiency edge of fuel cells over conventional ways of creating utility power is high enough that the 2% loss won't make much difference.
